STUDIO ARTS (ARTS)Chair: B.G. Muhn, Director of Studio Art (202) 687-7063 PRE SESSION (May 19-June 13)Digital Art I Prereq: Either ARTS-001 Design or ARTS-110 Drawing I. Introduction to the techniques and aesthetics of the personal computer as a visual arts tool. A variety of software and hardware will be utilized in the development of a portfolio of printed and electronic images in this new medium. Emphasis is on creative individuality. Students enrolled in Studio courses will devote a minimum of 4 - 6 hours per week outside of class to develop and complete assignments. Watercolor This is a studio class in the techniques of watercolor. Methods and materials of painting from nature and abstracting from nature will be taught. An extended museum visit as a class will be included.
FIRST SESSION (June 2-July 3)Drawing I: Visual Language THIS COURSE HAS BEEN CANCELLEDPhotography I This course is designed to develop the hands-on skills necessary to produce and identify the elements of a good photograph and to acquire a thorough working knowledge of appropriate 35mm photographic equipment. Class lectures, discussions and darkroom lab assignments will deal with photographic composition, criticism and history, camera and lens types, film types, and film and paper development systems. Digital Art I THIS COURSE HAS BEEN CANCELLED.SECOND SESSION (July 7-August 8)Introduction to Printmaking This course is for beginning to advanced students. Students will start with Intaglio (etching) and learn how to prepare zinc plates for line etching, aquatint, drypoint, soft and lift ground techniques, open bite, mezzotint, and engraving. Images on these plates will be printed in black and white as well as color. Additional lectures on lithography and relief may be given.
