Digital Art I

Prereq: Either ARTS-001 Design or ARTS-110 Drawing I. Introduction to the techniques and aesthetics of the personal computer as a visual arts tool.  A variety of software and hardware will be utilized in the development of a portfolio of printed and electronic images in this new medium. Emphasis is on creative individuality. Students enrolled in Studio courses will devote a minimum of 4 - 6 hours per week outside of class to develop and complete assignments.

This is a studio class in the techniques of watercolor. Methods and materials of painting from nature and abstracting from nature will be taught. An extended museum visit as a class will be included. 


FIRST SESSION (June 2-July 3)

Drawing I: Visual Language

This course will help students develop basic drawing skills using a variety of media and techniques.  Students will become knowledgable of various topics and vocabulary in drawing such as line, perspective, tone, proportion, and composition, among others.  Other purposes for this course are to develop visual communication skills and to be able to critically evaluate drawing.

This course is designed to develop the hands-on skills necessary to produce and identify the elements of a good photograph and to acquire a thorough working knowledge of appropriate 35mm photographic equipment. Class lectures, discussions and darkroom lab assignments will deal with photographic composition, criticism and history, camera and lens types, film types, and film and paper development systems.

SECOND SESSION (July 7-August 8)

Introduction to Printmaking

This course is for beginning to advanced students.  Students will start with Intaglio (etching) and learn how to prepare zinc plates for line etching, aquatint, drypoint, soft and lift ground techniques, open bite, mezzotint, and engraving.  Images on these plates will be printed in black and white as well as color.  Additional lectures on lithography and relief may be given.  The class will focus on traditional printmaking methods and techniques to develop personal imagery.

History of Printmaking: Methods and Materials

This course is for beginning to advanced students and especially excellent for both studio art and art history majors.  Students will work with various techniques and study the history of the following printmaking methods/techniques:  Relief (woodcut and linoleum cut), Intaglio (etching, aquatint, soft ground, open bite, and drypoint), and Lithography (stone and plate).  Additional lectures on engraving, mezzotint, photo, and computer assisted techniques will also be covered.
