FIRST SESSION (June 2 - July 3)

Intensive First Level Japanese I

This course is designed for students with limited to no background in Japanese.  It emphasizes mastery of the basic structure of Japanese through intensive conversational exercises and practice, including an introduction to Japanese syllabaries (hiragana and katakana) and about 100 kanji (Chinese characters) and the development of reading and writing skills.

The Anime World

A general introduction to Anime, with a focus on films by Miyazaki Hayao, Otomo Katsuhiro and Oshii Mamoru, and film-related Manga, including Miyazaki's Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind, Otomo's Akira, and Masamune Shirow's Ghost in the Shell. Taught in English and open to all students.


SECOND SESSION (July 7 - August 8)

Intensive First Level Japanese II

Prereq: JAPN-011 or equivalent.  This course continues to develop oral communication skills as well as reading and writing skills, including an introduction to an additional 200 kanji characters.
