Department of Spanish and Portuguese website

Summer Institute in Spanish: June 2 - August 8, 2008

The Department of Spanish and Portuguese offers a Summer Institute which includes intensive and non-intensive language courses in Spanish. The purpose of the language courses is to facilitate the mastery of the Spanish language in a shorter period than is possible during the academic year. The Institute combines formal course work with co-curricular activities in order to provide a learning environment similar to total immersion or study in a foreign country. Formal course work in the intensive courses includes work in reading, grammar, vocabulary, conversation, and culture. Instruction is provided in small classes by a professor and a drill instructor. In addition, video tapes and other audio-visual aids are used. Co-curricular activities include a coffee hour, conversation periods and social activities.

All Georgetown and Non-Georgetown students who have not taken a Spanish class at Georgetown University and wish to do so during the summer must complete an on-line placement examination.  This four-part exam Spanish Language Institute Placement Examination will determine the appropriate Spanish course into which a student should be placed and is about 90 minutes is duration.
