1) Application, Enrollment, and Registration Information

*Who can take classes at Georgetown University?

Georgetown University summer courses are open to:

1.  current Georgetown students in good standing
2.  undergraduate and graduate students in good standing at other colleges and universities
3.  high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with at least a "B" average and who are
recommended by a guidance counselor or principal
4.  international students with a sufficient TOEFL score
5.  other individuals whose educational/work background qualifies them for the course they
      want to take.

*How many sessions are offered at Georgetown University during the summer?

We offer four sessions in the summer.  The four-week Pre Session offers intensive courses that run from late May - early June.  The First and Second Sessions are five-week courses in June and July, respectively.  The Cross Session offers eight-week courses.  Please note, however, that most Cross Session courses are for nursing students.

*What are the requirements for undergraduates and graduate students to participate in the program?

Georgetown students in good standing should register online via Student Access+ during spring Pre-registration, which begins January 15, 2008.  If you are registering for courses after Pre-registration, you must fill out an Add/Drop Form, have your dean sign it, then submit it to the Summer School office.

Non-GU students must be in good standing and complete a Summer School Application and submit an official copy of your most recent transcript (if you have attended multiple institutions, we only need your latest transcript).

*Are the requirements the same for high school students?

High school students must follow the application procedure for the Summer Programs for High School Students.

*What are the application requirements for international students?

There are several steps an international student must take to enroll in Georgetown University Summer School:

1. Complete the Summer School Application and submit to the Summer School Office.
2. Provide a TOEFL score report.
3. Provide a copy of your most recent transcript (report of grades).
4. Provide accurate financial documentation according to the guidelines given in the Summer School International Student Visa Status Questionnaire.
5. Mail these application materials by May 9 for the First Session (June 2 - July 3) courses or June 1 for Second Session courses (July 7 - August 8).
6. International students will receive additional information upon admission and can contact Georgetown University's Office of International Programs at 202-687-5867 for any Visa-related questions.

*Please note: your application will not be processed, and you will not be enrolled in summer classes, until all steps are completed.

*When does registration open and close?

We begin accepting applications at the end of the fall semester.  Georgetown University students can enroll online via Student Access+ beginning January 15, 2008.

There is no official deadline for applications.  We continue to accept applications until the first day of the course.  However, classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis, so submitting your application early is highly recommendated in order to secure a spot in your preferred courses.

*How will I know if I have been admitted?

Upon receipt of your completed application by the Summer School Office, your admission eligibility will be reviewed. Once you have been accepted into Summer School, you will be contacted by email and letter with course electronic enrollment instructions.  If you haven't received any correspondence from us within 3 weeks of submitting your application materials, please contact the Enrollment Office at scsenrollment@georgetown.edu to inquire about your application status.

*Will taking a Georgetown Summer School course increase my chances of being accepted as a degree candidate to Georgetown University?

No.

*Whom do I notify about a change of address?

To insure prompt delivery of bills, grades, and other correspondence, please update your contact information by using Student Access +.

*What if I need to withdraw from the program entirely?

To officially withdraw from your Summer School courses, you must fill out an Add/Drop Form, which can be picked up at the Registrar's Office or the Summer School Office.  You will be refunded according to the refund schedule.  Georgetown students must get the Add/Drop Form signed by their dean.  If it is difficult for you to come to campus, you can call or email the Summer School Office to drop your course(s). *Please note: If you have taken the final exam, we cannot, under any circumstances, withdraw you from the course.

2) Courses, Programs, and Grades

*Can I audit classes at the Georgetown Summer School?

Yes.  If you wish to audit a course - in other words, take it for no credit/no grade - you still must submit an application and the most recent copy of your transcript.  Please note your wish to audit the course on your application.  Auditors must pay full summer tuition.  Georgetown students must get permission from their dean to audit courses.

If you are enrolled in a course for credit and you wish to switch to auditor status, you must fill out an Add/Drop Form, indicate the change, and get signatory approval from the professor by the end of the Add/Drop period for the session.  If you are a Georgetown student, you must get approval from your dean or advisor in addition to the professor.

*What is the maximum number of courses/credits I can take?

You can take one course during the Pre Session, and no more than 7 credits in both the First and/or Second Sessions. (Thus, a full summer load is 1 course in the Pre Session, 2 courses in the First Session and 2 courses in the Second Session.)  Students who would like to take more than the full load must get permission from the dean of the Summer School.

*Can graduate students take undergraduate courses for graduate credit?

Students wishing to receive graduate credit for 100- or 200- level courses must complete a "Request for Approval" form available in the Summer School Office, and have it approved by 1) the instructor of the course, 2) the Chair of the appropriate department and 3) your dean (if you are a Georgetown student).  The form must then be submitted to the Summer School by the end of the Add/Drop period for the session the student plans to attend.  The application and registration procedures are the same as for other Summer School courses. *Please note: Graduate credit for undergraduate courses cannot be granted unless this procedure is completed.

*Can I take a science course without taking the lab?  Can I take only the lab section of a course?

Yes.  It is possible to take only a lecture or only a lab in our chemistry and physics courses.  You must enroll in the proper section to do so.  (Please contact the Biology Department directly to inquire about special sections.)

*How do I request a transcript?  Will my credits transfer?

The Summer School does not issue transcripts.  Please print out the Transcript Request Form from the Registrar's website and send or fax it to the Office of the Registrar.

*I have already submitted my application but now want to take different classes.  What do I do?

You need to complete an Add/Drop Form, which you can pick up at our office.  If you are a Georgetown student, you must get signatory approval from your dean or advisor.  If you are unable to come to campus to complete an Add/Drop Form, please contact the Summer School.  *Please note: If you are making the change after the drop deadline, you must obtain the Instructor's permission on the Add/Drop Form.

*Do summer courses have prerequisites?

Some courses do have prerequisites.  These are clearly marked in our course descriptions.

*When are final exams held?

Final exams are usually given on the final day of class, unless your professor tells you otherwise.

*How do I purchase my books for summer courses?

Once you have received your syllabus on the first day of class, there are a couple of ways to get your textbooks.  The first is to stop by the Leavey Center bookstore on main campus.  The second option is to buy your books online at the bookstore's website.

*What happens if the course(s) I want to take are cancelled?

We will notify you by email before the class begins if your class has been cancelled.  You may enroll in another open course at that time.

3) Financial Information

*Are scholarships available for students?

Yes.  Georgetown students should contact the Office of Student Financial Services to inquire about summer financial assistance.  Applications for summer aid become available on March TBA, 2008 and are due to the Office of Student Financial Services on April TBA, 2008.

Non-Georgetown students can apply for a partial tuition scholarship through the Summer School.  Applications are due May 15, 2008 and should be sent to the Scholarship Coordinator in the Summer School.

*How do I pay my bill?

The Office of Student Accounts accepts payments by cash, check, electronic check, wire, or credit card.  Payments may be made in person, by mail, or, if you are using a credit card, by fax.  If you want to pay by credit card, you must include the credit card number, expiration date of the card, amount to be charged, type of credit card, name of cardholder, and the signature of the cardholder and date.

*Does the Summer School have a deferred payment plan?

The Office of Student Accounts offers a deferred payment option.  A deferment allows you to complete your registration without paying your bill in full at the time of registration.  You can defer only summer charges.

By deferring payment you agree to pay a $60 Deferment Fee and a 1.75% service charge per month on the outstanding balance.  You also agree to pay on demand all collection costs and attorneys' fees incurred by the University if you default.  You will receive a bill each month until the balance is paid in full.

A deferment can be signed at late registration.  However, if you wait until late registration to request the deferment, you will be charged an $80.00 late fee, as well as the $60.00 deferment fee.  *Please note: The Office of Student Accounts reserves the right to deny a student this payment option.

4) Services and Student Life

*As a Summer School student, will I get a network computing account?  University ID card?

After you are enrolled in summer courses, you will receive correspondence from the Office of the University Registrar regarding your username and password for your GU Net ID.  You will be given a Georgetown email account, which you should check throughout the summer for correspondence from faculty and the Summer School.

New students must also obtain a Georgetown University GOCard.  Information about the GOCard will be sent with your Summer School Welcome Packet.

*Is on-campus housing available for Summer School students?

Yes.  Please visit the Summer Housing Office for all information regarding housing at Georgetown University over the summer months.

*Are meal plans available for summer students?

Yes.  Please visit Dining Services for information on summer meal plans.

*Is on-campus parking available for Summer School students?

No.  On-campus parking is off-limits for summer students.  Parking in the Georgetown community is extremely limited.  Two-hour street parking is sometimes available, but we highly recommend students to take advantage of the Georgetown University Transportation Shuttle, which provides service from nearby Metrorail stations and other locations to Main Campus.
